Interview with AARON LAZAR

“Bring me the head of Liza Minelli, on the strapping young body of a Rumanian Buck”
AARON LAZAR is the singer in the Giraffes, the everything in Rumanian Buck, and the mechanical heart behind Valentine’s Day in New York.  He is also an artist though he is loath to admit it.

What’s up:
the usual

Where are you from:
Youngstown Ohio

Where are you now:
Brooklyn New York

How long have you been at it:
it= living in the “big city” about ten years
it= making music, about 7 years
it= making art, about 30 years
it= working like a jerk, far far too long

What got you started:
i came to NYC to go to Grad School- a once in a lifetime opportunity. With some small grants it even seemed affordable, at the time. It was a lot of fun, and met some great folks- but i realise now that a little more self confidence would have saved me roughly 60K

What else do you do:
i do lots and lots of things, most people know me as the front man of the Giraffes, a few know me as the guy who makes Rumanian Buck happen. Some know me as the quiet graphic designer n the corner who always looks pissed off about something. and some people know me as that kid who has all those implanted machines in his body…

How do you keep it together:
i don’t

What are you reading:
freelancers union medical benefit schemes and

What comedy and/or comedians are you into:
Black ones

What are you listening to, lately:
i have not been listening to much lately- though the first pussy galore record is kicking me in the pants again (exile on main street cover)

What art, if any, you seen worth talking about:
lots worth seeing- few things worth talking about-
i always thought one of the best things about a really solid piece of work was that it didn’t need a lot of talking to set it off-
a welcome respite from the yammering. That is where the intimacy and joy of artistic expression happens- far away from talk.
I suppose that’s what i paid my 60K to learn really.

Worked any fucked-up jobs? Do tell:
all of em are fucked up in one way or another –

Played any fucked-up shows:
not enough of the shows are fucked up- but- there have been beatings, shootings and electrocutions…. ok i take that back

With whom, if anyone, do you roll:

Where are you headed:
hopefully someplace nice

Where is the rest of it headed:
definitely someplace shitty

What can you do about it:
not a whole hell of a lot- i am a keep your head down kind of guy- if you can get away with it – then its no skin off

Are there any people you’d like to mention who’ve helped you work it out:
you guys always seem to help

Anything you have in the works, on the ready, or on the horizon:
fixing my credit score
