Interview with CLIPD BEAKS
N: Just chillin. Record just came out, some people are digging it, feels good, feeling accomplished, like all the sudden I can play guitar better because I think I can. Good times.
S: Livin n Jamin
Rhymin n Stealin
R: Clipd Beaks record just came out and I’m pretty excited about how people are responding to it. It was a long shitty last year so having something you’ve worked hard on being acknowledged makes the future all the more optimistic.
Where are you from:
N: St. Michael-Albertville, Minnesota
S: Minneapolis, MN. Aqua City.
R: Minneapolis Minnesota, AKA The Tundra
Where are you now:
N: 630 Mariposaa Ave, Oakland CA
S: Oakland, CA.
R:Oakland California, AKA Funktown
How long have you been at it:
N: this band, 7 years.. other relatives of it, longer…
S: Since ’81.
R: It’s been 7 awesome years thus far with. Before that, stoner bands.
What got you started:
N: We just had to.
S: A twinkle in the eye of the universe/
R: I’ve been playin music since I was about 7. I started to realize (ha) that I wanted to play music consistently when I was in high school. As for Clipd Beaks, it was a molding of 2 bands who shared the same admiration for music of all kinds
What else do you do:
S: Garden, pet and feed my cat, walk around, love Oakland, comb my hair
R: I work like a sick ass dog, waking up with the birds delivering juice to grocery stores. I also swim and yes, I do wear a speedo.
How do you keep it together:
S: How don’t I?
R: 2 things: Music and family.
What are you reading:
N: Childhood’s End by Arthur C. Clarke, the Abs Diet by David Zinczenko
S: Diary by Palahniuk. And some internet blogs.
R: Just finished “The Dirt”, the Motley Crue book. I highly recommend it.
What comedy and/or comedians are you into:
N: My girlfriend.
S: Chris Rock, Dave Chapelle, Aziz Ansari, TV Carnage, Billy Corgan.
R: It all depends on my mood. I could be into dumb shit or smart comedy. As of lately I’ve been really into Richard Pryor.
What are you listening to, lately:
N: The last 5 things I’ve listened to were Barn Owl, Tuxedo Moon, Neil Young, Low, Nirvana, and Raccoons.
S: Motorhead, Neil Young, and Arthur Russell.
R: Depeche Mode, Spiritualized and Neil Young.
What art, if any, you seen worth talking about:
N: Michael Bell-Smith, Chapters 1-12 of R. Kelly’s Trapped in the Closet Synced and Played Simultaneously. Saw it at the SFMOMA 75th anniversary day couple weeks ago. It was unbelievable.
S: Oh dear.
R: It’s been awhile, none at the moment.
Worked any fucked-up jobs? Do tell:
N: I have never felt time move so slow, as it did while I was a telemarketer. Reality changed when I was at that job, which was really fucked-up/dream like. Smoke breaks were surreal.
S: Worked as a nighttime parking lot attendant/cashier, it only lasted one night. They never paid me.
R: In high school I worked at a pizza place where the owner was a bi-polar coke head. He one time took a pizza I made and threw it against the wall and told me to clean it up. I didn’t, but the fucked up thing about it was that 10 seconds prior to the incident he was perfectly fine.
Played any fucked-up shows:
N: too many to count…
S: Too many to count. One was at a barn and a girl went into labor.
R: In Baltimore, a crackhead attempted to shit on the stage while we were playing. It was pretty surreal based on the fact the strobe lights were on and you could only see snippets of this gangly dude running around on the stage with his pants down screaming, “I just want to take a shit”.
With whom, if anyone, do you roll:
N: all those who can hang…
R: I’m not quite sure what is being asked but I roll with my band brothers.
Where are you headed:
N: How ever far this ride will take us…
S: Time will tell.
R: Hopefully tour this year. We’re trying to go to Europe for the first time. Hopefully it pans out.
Where is the rest of it headed:
N: Where it will
S: Wish I knew.
R: Hopefully home to the family at some point. Don’t get to see them as much as I want to.
What can you do about it:
N: be apart of it.
S: What can’t I do.
R: Keep it focused or win the lottery.
Are there any people you’d like to mention who’ve helped you work it out:
N: thinking about this question, there’s a huge windstorm of faces blowing through my head, too many to list out. We are very fortunate to know and have worked with a lot of great people. I should definitely mention Ross Peacock though, as he’s been playing with us live, helping us do our new record justice live.
S: Too many to mention! I can’t start because I might forget someone! Arthur Russell.
R: Mookie and Jake (Lovepump United), Michelle (Panache) and are talented friend Nathan Budde who made the “blood” video.
People to look for:
N: I’m diggin this band, Raccoons from our hood…
R: Band wise, a band called White cloud and another called Raccoon from Oakland. All are young kids who are making really great music.
People to look out for, because they are bad news:
S: Sarah Palin… and all of Fox.
R: The majority of sound guys at shows.
Anything you have in the works, on the ready, or on the horizon:
N: Gonna start posting (monthly) Womb Moons© volumes, which will be jams/recordings/collages stuff similar to what we did with our cdr Robo Gnomes: Majik Moments back in the day… The first one is included here with the stuff I’ve got for you guys…
Also, touring this year and working on new recordings, hope to have something new by the years end.
S: More Clipd Beaks. Tons.
R: We’re always making new stuff, nothing concrete at the moment but a lot of ideas streaming through. Also thinking of putting out some straight up jams that we make at our space. More to come, more to come!
Anything else you want to pass on:
N: Indian Jewelry Rules
S: I love you guys. Seriously. You and yr whole Texas crew are some of the best peeps I have ever met. Ya’ll inspire me to keep on truckin. For real.
R: Leavin the bad behind and lookin to the good.
