Interview with James FLA // FREE LOVING ANARCHISTS

Interview with James from rad underground label FLA (Free Loving Anarchists.)

What’s up:
Being interviewed by the Infamous Indian Jewelry! ///// Awesome!

Where are you from:
First few years in South Carolina. Last couple of decades…scattered around Houston.

Where are you now:
North Houston (Homogenized Suburbia)

How long have you been at it:
I’d say since I was born /// FLA as a “Label” ; meaning an entity which releases art in a form of public consumption; circa 1995. Out of my way: 2002 – present.

What got you started:
Not having a choice…I live my life the only way I know how.
I don’t consider art a luxury, nor a form of entertainment.

Its what I would call Living my life…so really I “got started” when I was brought into this world.

What else do you do:
FLA “The Label” is just an extension of the art that I am always doing. My life consists of making money to pay the bills sooo just about every minute outside of my responsibilities to surviving in the modern world is filled with doing something that I would personally consider “productive”….most of the time.

In Public I make noise as pink playground /// ; but I also working in as many art forms that time allows and I have an insatiable appetite when it comes to learning more of most art forms….To bad school isn’t free in the US of A. I’d be in school 24/7 learning and using/stealing the tools at school so I can do more that is out of my range financially.

About 95 percent of all the art/designs surrounding FLA are created by me either from scratch or are partially original (Art Terrorism) = collages using various elements from other artists altering them beyond their original state….Altered work from as far back as 1800’s! Even some unknown artists work being put to renewed use. Usually the collages I make have very subtle references to a few of my interests and obsessions…Sometimes not so subtle depending on who’s looking at em!

Most art that I make never sees the light of day usually though.

How do you keep it together:
Family, Friends and Art.

What are you reading:
“Sex & Typography” – Robert Brownjohn Biography, Various Nobuyoshi Araki Interviews. Venus in Furs was the last fiction I read. Mostly non fiction and I read a lot in segments depending on my moods. Just about everything from art history, mysticism, psychology, music theory, poetry, manuals and everything in between…it really depends and usually has to do with wanting to know something very specific. I like Oscar Wilde, Aldous Huxley, Ray Bradbury as far as fiction goes. The Eye by Vladimir Nabokov was an intense one!….dunno its been awhile since I’ve sit down with a good book. Usually too busy these days.

What comedy and/or comedians are you into:
Russ Meyer Films, Jess Franco Films, Blood for Dracula by Paul Morrissey. I usually like comedy that is very indirect. I’ve been told many times that I don’t have a sense of humour; but really It’s most people don’t share my sense of humour or remotely grasp it. Dark Humour, and tongue in cheek stuff usually. Matt Stilt, Jason Villegas & Donnie Mcclure are the funniest people I have ever known!

What are you listening to, lately:
Pink Playground (werk!), Rape Faction Lp Demos, Sacred Space – s/t, Lois Magic – s/t, Atlas Young Demos, Fluker Love – s/t, Mayfair Set- Young Ones ///// Loop Reissues (All!), Never Ever Land (International Artist{s} Records Comp), Nico, Can, Amon Düül I-II etc, Françoise Hardy, John Barry, Francis Lai, Jonathan Halper ///// 13th Floor Elevators, Syd Barrett, Suicide, JAMC, MBV, VU always and forever etc.. I could go on…but I won’t…

What art, if any, you seen worth talking about:
So much art to catch up on. I am obsessed with so much! Like music; I’m constantly digging learning about past movements / artists and occasionally I dwell in the present. I’m current obsessed with the Bauhaus movement and interested mostly anything leaning in the direction thereof. My usual favs are Věra Chytilová, Bridget Riley, Kenneth Anger, Nobuyoshi Araki, Maya Deren, Andre De Dienes, Akira Kurosawa, Robert Brownjohn, Dario Argento, Junko Mizuno, William Klien, Harri Peccinotti…I could go on and on but I won’t…

I’m very fond of National Geography Photography 60’s-80’s and the cover art of hundreds of penguin books.

People I know or work with =  J. Mendez’s Collages(tropic of cancer, sandwell etc), Grry (palm tress, hedmolt,a million othersss), Domokos’ Collages(Future Blondes->beyond) and many others I’m sure I’m leaving out and forgetting at the moment…

Worked any fucked-up jobs? Do tell:
Too many….Retail etc. I once worked food service for a month and a half and sliced my finger on a deli slicer while cutting tomatoes….it was pretty funny and totally surreal. It felt weird looking down at all this tomato juice thinking something felt strange and then looked at my hand gushing blood through the shredded glove. What made it fucked up though was the manager was trying to get the company to not pick up the medical bill ($600 band-aid…hahaha) and pin it on me so it wouldn’t affect her bonuses….dumb

Played any fucked-up shows:
Every single one!

With whom, if anyone, do you roll:
La Familia.

Where are you headed:
Destination Ecstacy.

Where is the rest of it headed:
Dunno, haven’t asked….”There are problems in these times but oh none of them are mine”-Lou Reed

What can you do about it:
I do what I can!

Are there any people you’d like to mention who’ve helped you work it out:
Tara!!!, Morten (Skrot Up), J. Mendez (Tropic/Sandwell), Matt Stilt, and the few who helped me learn lessons
indirectly; because they are bad news….

People to look for:
Free Loving Anarchists, social criminals of the status quo….all the fucked up children of the world.

+Can’t have the good without the bad+
