Interview with HARRISON OWEN*FINGERED MEDIA

Harrison Owen be Fingered

What’s up:

Hey guys

Where are you from:

Born and and raised in DC/Bethesda, Maryland.  I can’t deny the influence of the music scene there when I was growing up.

Where are you now:

I’ve been in Brooklyn since ’01.

How long have you been at it:

Digital video cameras came out just as I was getting out of school – I got one in ’99 and started shooting some shows and putting videos together.

What got you started:

As soon as I was able to make DVDs I started compiling them – the first one was stuff I shot in ’01 – ’02 – Erase Errata, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Black Dice – and I just burned copies and gave them to friends.  Then I had the idea of adding visual art and making a DVD zine series, focusing on a different city’s scene for each one.

What else do you do:

Around the same time I started getting hired to shoot shows for videos and the web, and art openings and events, like the Deitch Art Parade and MoMA’s PopRally events.  I’ve also been asked by some of my favorite bands – Excepter, Psychic Ills, Blues Control – to make videos for them.  But I’ve also been organizing and throwing parties, gigs, art shows, etc.  Always thinking about what direction to to take it next.  Oh, and I make music with my friend and roommate, Anne Hege.  Our project is called New Prosthetics.

How do you keep it together:

Therapy and anti-depressants deserve fair mention – though these days just staying healthy and exercising, yoga, etc is the key .  And work – staying busy – and hanging around good people who are busy doing good things.

What are you reading:

I read the New Yorker.  And I just picked up the new issue of ANP.

What comedy and/or comedians are you into:

I just saw Michael Haneke’s new film ‘White Ribbon’ – I thought it was pretty hilarious.

What are you listening to, lately:

the new Excepter album and pretty much anything those guys at XXJFG’s dig up

What art, if any, you seen worth talking about:

I’ve been looking at all the art that’s going on the next issue of Fingered – great Philly artists – Damian Weinkrantz, Andrew Jeffrey Wright, Emily Glaubinger, Christopher Kline, Keith Greiman….

Worked any fucked-up jobs? Do tell:

All commerical production jobs are fucked up and not worth talking about.

Played any fucked-up shows:

New Prosthetics are hoping to fuck up some shows soon

With whom, if anyone, do you roll:

Good people

Where are you headed:

Up, up, and away…

Where is the rest of it headed:

Around and around?

What can you do about it:

Kindly suggest detours and provide love and support.

Are there any people you’d like to mention who’ve helped you work it out:

So many – all the artists I’ve met and worked with in Brooklyn, San Francisco, Mexico City, Montreal, L.A., Philadelphia, and elsewhere…..

People to look for:

check them out on the DVDs – www.fingeredmedia.com

People to look out for, because they are bad news:

You will know them when they open their mouths.

Anything you have in the works, on the ready, or on the horizon:

The above mentioned Fingered DVD Zine #6  – Philadelphia – out this spring.  And the DVD for Todd Pendu’s New York Eye & Ear Festivals I shot last year – plan is to have that ready for the next one at the end of May.

Anything else you want to pass on:

Love & Respect
