Interview with OAKEATER

OAKEATER is Seth Sher, Alex Barnett, and Jeremiah Fisher

What’s up:
Alex: No one wants to answer that

Where are you from:
Alex: Waukegan, IL home of Ray Bradbury
Seth: Chicago, IL home of…..John Wayne Gacy
Jeremiah: Missouri backwoods

Where are you now:
Alex: Chicago

Seth: Chicago, home of….Barrack Obama

Jeremiah: was Chi town, now Champaign IL

How long have you been at it:

Alex: Oakeater became a band for our 1st show August of 2006 (recorded for Intrusion)

Seth: All told, if you added up all the time we actually PLAYED music in those 3 1/2 yrs it’s be about 120 hrs

What got you started:

Seth: My old band, Coughs broke up and I needed an “evil” musical outlet

Jeremiah: Smoking weed, inhaling mold in Mr City’s dark basement

What else do you do:
Alex: Try and fix synthesizers.  Electronics tech for a metallurgist.  General hack nerdery.

Jeremiah: Putting together a modular synthesizer – synth jammin’, reading old D&D rulebooks, chilling with my buddies!

Seth: Play drums

How do you keep it together:
Alex: I don’t

Seth: yeah, I don’t really…if anything goes wrong in my life or some unexpected obstacle pops up I just descend into a black hole of despair (where I write all my Oakeater parts, of course)

What are you reading:
Alex: Red Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson

Seth: Interpersonal perception by R.D. Laing and the Arkham Asylum graphic novel
Jeremiah: still trying to finish the “history of western philosophy” by Bertrand Russell and after that it will be time to take a second look at the Flowers of Evil”

What comedy and/or comedians are you into:
Alex: The Mrs Doubtfire horror preview. Toto Shreds

Seth: Norm Macdonald, William Shatner

Jeremiah: Tim and Eric Awesome Show, British playwright (?) Mike Leigh

What are you listening to, lately:
Alex: Freedom’s Children, Ashra, Oneohtrix point never

Seth: Magma (always), Meshuggah, Sodom, Death, Pestilence
Jeremiah: Lately? Nothing but the sounds of this modular. I have been on a module buying spree lately, so there are all sorts of new tones and drones to discover.

What art, if any, you seen worth talking about:
Alex: The person who laid out the PCB’s for the Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 rev 2.  They put all kinds of hidden troll faces in there and it was a pretty serious job back then.

Seth: I just saw this really awesome Iannis Xenakis exhibit when I was in NYC…it was just a bunch of rough notes and diagrams of some of his musical pieces and weird essays on acoustics and the “architecture” of music
Jeremiah: my wife has this really cool book of Latvian decorative weaving. There’s a lot of distressed tapestry work that is beautiful and a little haunting. I’ve seen some really killer black light posters lately too. This book is cool: http://www.blacklight.com/items/ULTRAVIOLET. I think you can get it at urban outfitters so there ya go.

Worked any fucked-up jobs? Do tell:

Alex: I watered plants in the Sears (now Willis) tower.  Sounds cool but it was constant exposure to soul-sucking.

Seth: Not really. Worked at a porn video store for a while but it was in a super yuppie ‘hood so wasn’t as creepy as it should have been. Bike messenger-ing was pretty fucked-up but not in the way you’re probably talking about

J: Fuck Jobs.

Played any fucked-up shows:

Seth: Not in Oakeater, but I played a pretty scary show in Odessa, TX once at a bar called Earls 2 and Super Happy Funland with Rusted Shut was a good time

With whom, if anyone, do you roll:

Seth: Other people who spend less time rollin’ and more time rockin’
Jeremiah: my italian greyhound, Blini.

Where are you headed:

J: Hopefully to Kentucky to check out some caves as soon as it gets warm outside.

Where is the rest of it headed:
Alex: All the cool old people are dying

Seth: hopefully the apocalypse, though I wish it was a less self-serving one
J: Obscurity

What can you do about it:
Alex: Not be cynical.

Seth: Occupy as much time that would otherwise be spent thinking about the state of the world and the plight of humanity with more fun things

J: Get rid of all my shit and take it easy. Get good at one thing and be happy doing it.

Are there any people you’d like to mention who’ve helped you work it out:

Alex: Ortman
Seth: Definitely Andy Ortmann, My dad, and Satan I guess

People to look for:
Alex: Mayor Daley (The band)

Seth: anything I’m involved in of course (Ga’an, Psychic Steel, Pain Reaper, Akhkhazu, Panicsville) and Fielded. Yourself.
J: Gatekeeper and the rest of the EBM revival.

People to look out for, because they are bad news:
Alex: Mayor Daley (The crook)

Seth: Too many to name but here’s a few: God, Jesus, Mohammed, Allah, and anyone from Michigan
J: The impatient masses

Anything you have in the works, on the ready, or on the horizon:
Alex: If all goes well we will be touring this May.  Also we have two split 12″s.  One with Mammifer will hopefully come out this summer on Hydra Head.  The other with Yellow Swans may be waiting for our reunion tour.

Seth: ditto

Anything else you want to pass on:

Seth: If there’s any doctors or dentists out there who’d like to help me for free….I’m poor. Also, listen to Magma and metal all the time. And…don’t fuck with me
