Interview with POD BLOTZ / SUZY POLING
Pod Blotz is Suzy Poling. She is not a doctor. She is not not a doctor. There’s a helix stick with something carved on it. Things come together when they are bid.
Helium. And making it through 2012
where are you now:
In the bay area in California, about to go to Midwest for some shows and then moving to Los Angeles right after.
how long have you been at it:
Since high school but really my whole life.
what got you started:
I started taking artistic photographs in High School and went to many new wave, punk, goth, noise and techno shows and clubs since I was 13.
how do you keep it together:
With lots of daydreaming time, self hypnosis, lists and keeping very organized all of the time.
its all illusion anyway
what are you reading:
Order in Space and some Ursula Le Guin.
what comedians/comedy are you into:
Andy Kaufman for life and most of my friends.
what are you listening to lately:
The Future (early Human League recordings), Ike Yard, Death in June, Tremblexy, Conrad Schnitzler, Daniel Higgs, Throbbing Gristle and John Hassell (his Dream Theory LP).
what art, if any, you seen worth talking about:
I am a huge fan of Damien Hirst, Kurt Schwitters, Rudi Gernreich, David Altmejd and Kamau Amu Patton.
worked any fucked up jobs: do tell:
I worked at a thrift store in Detroit in high school with a lot of bearded women. I also have found myself in some interesting situations from my freelance photography work such as photographing a man receiving brain surgery once, I also photographed a human brain bank and the coolest assignment that I had was going into the radioactive Enrico Fermi Lab at the University of Chicago. You know, the imfamous A-bomb research lab.
with whom, if anyone, do you roll:
I tend to be a bit of a lone wolf but generally roll with other similar kind whom I consider to be my art family or gang. I love my friend Daniel Higgs, Kamau Amu Patton, Astral Eyes, Future Blondes, CF, Andy Ortmann, MV Carbon, Marcia Bassett, Gx Jupitter-Larsen, Ryan Sixes, and my Portland friends including Chromium Dumb Belle. My psychic friend Sanaz is a real apple in my eye and I love the Uncanny Valley kids in Oakland and Jonnie Prey from Detroit. I am loyal to people in LA and NY and I love the work Experimental Video Half hour, ESP TV in NYC and also Indian Jewelry does!
where is the rest of it headed:
“straight to hell” (in a weird voice). Just kidding, I couldn’t resist. But I intend to just go a lot deeper with the work and to bring people with me. Ha! I have worked hard to integrate my visual work with my musical reality.
I’d like to just continue making work that helps people get into a deeper dream space. I make work that tries to make sense of Earth’s Phenomenon, such as the Superbvolano here in the States and other oddities that surrounds us.
what can you do about it:
To share research and to connect with others who are ready to reach some far out limits.
are there any people you’d like to who’ve helped you work it out:
I’m always looking out for my friends. I’m loyal that way.
